This soft green with subtle floral looked amazing!

Mini sessions are short, sweet, and packed with memories—but because they move quickly, a little preparation goes a long way! Whether you’ve booked your Wasilla or Palmer mini session with me or are thinking about it, these tips will help you feel ready, relaxed, and excited for your photos.

1. Arrive Early to Your Wasilla or Palmer Mini Session

Moms bold choice of color worked great with the neutrals of the rest of the family.

Mini sessions are scheduled back-to-back, so every minute counts. Plan to arrive at least 5 minutes early to your session location—whether it’s a wildflower field in Palmer or a scenic overlook in Wasilla. Arriving early means you can settle in, fix any last-minute hair or outfit adjustments, and start your session feeling calm instead of rushed.

2. Dress for Success – What to Wear for Mini Sessions in Alaska

Your wardrobe sets the tone for your photos, especially in the stunning outdoor settings we have here in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. Here’s what works best:

  • Coordinate, don’t match: Choose colors that complement each other without being identical. Need some inspo? Check out my pinterest board for some recommended color palates https://www.pinterest.com/brooksandhayesphotography/_saved/
    .

  • Earthy, muted tones photograph beautifully: Think soft neutrals, warm browns, deep greens, and dusty blues that look gorgeous against Alaska’s landscapes.

  • Avoid distractions: Skip bright neon colors, large logos, and bold tiny patterns. There are certainly ways to do these items well but it takes intention!

  • Start with mom’s outfit: Pick something comfortable and flattering, then coordinate everyone else’s clothing around it. Layers, textures, and accessories add interest without being overwhelming.

  • Choose Layers: Palmer wind or Hatcher Pass clouds and make weather change quickly! Cozy sweaters and cute cardigans keep everyone, warm, happy and looking good!

Our Alaskan weather can be unpredictable, so a small “just in case” bag can be a lifesaver. Consider bringing:

  • Water and small, mess-free snacks (great for kids)

  • Bug spray

  • Baby wipes for quick clean-ups

  • A light jacket or cardigan for chilly evenings

  • Shoes that match your location! No sprained ankles on Hatchers rolling hills!

4. Enjoy the Experience!

Mini sessions in Wasilla and Palmer are meant to be fun, relaxed, and full of genuine smiles. Don’t worry if your kids are wiggly or a little shy, often those in-between moments are the most precious. I’ll guide you every step of the way so you can enjoy your time together and let your family’s personality shine.
